It happened, our last child was the first in our family to break a bone. Hopefully it never happens again. Tues. at 4:15 Elise was playing with a friend and they were up on Elise's loft bed. They were pretending that they were scarred and so they were rushing to get down the ladder. Elise went down first and missed a step and fell on her head then her arm took the weight of her body. I was in the kitchen when I heard a thud, a cry and her friend frantically saying that Elise fell on her head!! I knew the sound instantly- it's the sound a mother never wants to hear and knows she has to brace herself and be prepared for whatever she may find. I found Elise crying hysterically and a very scared friend. Elise at that point had stood up (thank goodness her neck was fine..)and was complaining in between screams about her hurt nose (which is fine but has some rug burns on it- poor girls gonna need some cover up for that nose- she's had many accidents with that cute little button nose!) and also of her arm. That it hurt and was burning. I knew a burning sensation was not good and I couldn't get her comfortable or consoled. Time for a trip to the ER for an ex-ray!
So you do what a mother does. You grab clothes for your daughter who made need a change at the hospital, a water cup, pile kids in the car, leave your oldest at home who is on his way out the door to his own soccer practice soon. Drop off Elise's friend at her house so I don't have another kid at the ER and call doctor and husband on the way to the hospital in between daughter crying. All during this time I have to be a big girl and not cry myself because that would definitely scare the kids- it's our duty as mothers to "suck it up! no matter what the situation is.
To top things off Elise kept asking every five minutes innocently "what happened to me mommy?" And I would explain to her she fell off her ladder and hurt her arm. I knew her memory was fine because I kept asking her what her name was and her birthday. She could answer those questions, she just scarred me by asking me over and over what happened at home and all the way until we were in the ER! Her fell happened so fast she was obviously in shock from it all- but no memory loss now!!
We made it to the ER and by that time thank goodness Elise I believe was exhausted and was calm in my arms. Zee arrived after minutes while we were waiting in the ER-what a relief to have support~! Justise was a big help to me. He put Elise's socks on when I was holding her so she wouldn't be cold and he carried my very important purse which held my insurance cards, elise change of clothes and her water cup. Once at the ER we waited of course and was finally put back into a room where we waited of course again (what else do you do in the Er?). Elise was wheeled in her hospital bed to get x-rays- then back to the room where we waited again. All this time Elise was still pretty calm and not in too much pain. The doctor came back and confirmed she had broken it. They put a metal splint on with a wrap and that was very fascinating to her. Zee took this video (I didn't even know and I was happy he caught this moment!) on his phone and it was right when she had her arm wrapped and she was so enthralled with her arm!!! Anyways, Elise is doing great- she is in almost no pain-amazing! And she even went to a soccer training the day after the break. I only had her go because she was not in pain.
I have to say she warmed my heart out there on the indoor soccer field doing one-armed jumping jacks-So proud of her!! We'll see next week how her arm is healing and how much longer she has to keep her arm wrapped.

Oh, my goodness! Lucky you that she is your first one to break something. Good job for staying calm. It is so important to stay calm and SUCK IT UP as you said...All my kids have had some kind of head wound or fracture! we are professional E.R goers! heeeheeee! We are glad that she is not in much pain. Julie thinks of her often and it is sweet tohear her concerns for her best friend. She is also monkeying around less on her own bunk bed...
Holy cow, Leslie. Once again I honor you as best mom ever. I have broken my arm(s) 4 times. It's super scary as a kid, or whenever it's happening to you, but now that I am a mom, I can guarantee it's scarier watching your child in all that pain!!! You did everything right, of course. And she handled it so well; what a gal. Tell her we love her so much! Did she get a cast on it later?
